Synopsis

This book covers some fundamental topics in the field of optics, as well as some of its applications. It addresses themes such as electromagnetic optics, matrix optics, interferometry, diffraction, optical fibers, lasers and laser light, holography, and nonlinear optics. The text has a predominantly theoretical-practical character: for each topic, a summary of the theory is presented first, followed by a set of fully solved problems. The objective of these problems – a total of one hundred – is to provide a deeper understanding of the theory presented earlier. An additional one hundred problems are also proposed for students to solve.

Author Biography

Mário F. S. Ferreira

Mário Fernando dos Santos Ferreira graduated in Physics from the University of Porto and obtained his PhD, also in Physics, from the University of Aveiro, where he is currently a professor in the Department of Physics. His scientific interests lie in the areas of semiconductor lasers, optical amplifiers, special optical fibers, solitons, the effects of light polarization, and nonlinear optics. He is the author or co-author of approximately 400 scientific publications, including 30 book chapters and 12 books, including: “Optics and Photonics” (Lidel, 2003), “Nonlinear Effects in Optical Fibers” (John Wiley & Sons, 2011), “Topics in Mathematical Physics” (Editora Ciência Moderna, 2018), “Advances in Optoelectronic Technology and Industry Development” (CRC Press, 2019), “Optical Signal Processing in Highly Nonlinear Fibers” (CRC Press, 2020), “Optical Fiber Technology and Applications” (IOP Publishing, 2021), “Solitons in Optical Fiber Systems” (John Wiley & Sons, 2022), “Dissipative Optical Solitons” (Springer, 2022), “Photonic Crystal Fibers” (NOVA Science Publishers, 2022), and “Specialty Optical "Fibers" (Elsevier, 2023). He was the guest editor of several special issues of different international scientific journals. He is a Senior Member and Visiting Lecturer of the OPTICA (Optical Society of America) and SPIE – The International Society for Optics and Photonics.
